We need originality in the tech industry.
Come on guys - just stop copying each other already!

Innovation
Don’t you just love it when every once in a while a tech company comes with something that is actually new? New inventions that pushes the industry forward, revolutionising the way we interact with technology… or it with us? In my mind a great example of this is force touch - ahem ‘3D Touch’ -  that Apple and Huawei introduced in their new flagship smartphones not all too long ago (on a side note don’t say Apple copied Huawei - it takes more than a few weeks to develop a new piece of tech). I think even if it is not in its prime yet it could still really make their phones better.

The Problem

Then come the issue. There was an article I recently read that stated Samsung had released a patent for their own model of force touch. Great right? Pressure sensitive displays coming to mainstream western Android phones! Well  - maybe. But my real issue with this is the fact that if manufacturers keep copying one another then the pace of our technological advancements will drop rapidly. I get the fact that if a device has perks or some really good new feature it is likely to scoop up a new market share but for goodness sake - don’t copy them! For starters the company will always be one step behind the trend.

Solution

If companies were to invest a load more money into developing new and revolutionary tech the industry would be carried at a much faster speed - with new tech trying not to play it safe and mimic what has gone down well in the market but instead go out on a limb - introduce something new! And then this cycle will exponentially keep going exponentially fueling the market on. Does that not sound better?

Need Another Example?

Take cloud storage, it’s great right. Leaving the days of carrying USB flash drives in the dust. I can’t be sure for a fact (tell me if you know!) which company first took it mainstream but it is likely to be someone like onedrive or dropbox or perhaps Google drive. Yet even for that company wouldn’t it be better if nobody else invaded their ‘patch’ of the tech market. And for the other companies surely if they came up with something new and revolutionary instead of just copying off each other they could have there own little niche too?

What do you think

Anyway these are just my thoughts. Am I completely wrong - missing the blatantly obvious?  Throw a line down in the comments to let me know - constructive criticism is always welcome!
